The mid-80s there were these rumors about a new band from Hamburg. Were behind the EMILS perhaps SLIME? If you read the band name from back to front, then these rumors get natural food. And the spelling of the band lettering was very inspired by SLIME. But in the end that was nonsense, of course. There were no overlaps. The mid-80s began the first german bands to orient themselves on Ami-Hardcore. SPERMBIRDS, Skeezicks, Jingo De Lunch, H.O.A, UNWANTED YOUTH, SOS. The EMILS crossed on their demo hardcore punk and also metal. D.R.I. had just invented the crossover. The EMILS quickly became popular. Also because they had German lyrics, which were also very critical and directly and did not mince his words. They were directed for example against the Church, Neo-Nazis, nuclear power (Chernobyl was just explodes), compliance and also against the stupidity in the own scene. Scratched and bloodied, Jed Whitey stumble back into base camp after what seems like years in the punk rock wilderness, but they somehow sound better for it. Their two contributions to the record, ‘Punkrock Savant’ and ‘Punched in the Neck’, were recorded a while back but their take on ballsy old-school punk rock with a little metal chucked in is something that will still hold up at any house party today.Some have confused Extortion’s raw unapologetic honesty with belligerence. And they’re right: there’s no hiding the bile that’s simmering below the surface. Actually, there’s no simmering with Extortion, just a boiling cauldron of potential third-degree burns. They like their hardcore as ragey and as fast as fuck as much as singer Rohan Harrison likes ranting about things that piss him off. Take ‘Senile’, for example, with Harrison screaming, “You’re getting in my way stupid old man/Can’t understand a word you say.” It’s something anyone who has been forced to stand in a bank line on pension day can relate to. There is a definite skill and ability in being able to play with so much speed and aggression, and yet still sound this good. This 7” confirms it: Extortion are Australia’s best hardcore punk band.
